INDIGENOUS CULTURE

I approached this event with a documentary mindset where I capture everything the same way I am see it. In this case, it is not about being creative and what the best composition is because what matters in this moment is my ability to tell a story with these pictures. By prioritizing the storytelling aspect of these images, I aim to give voice to the experiences of Indigenous women and girls, allowing their stories to be seen and felt in the most direct and impactful way possible. Indigenous studies opened my eyes up to this matter more than anything allowing me to take on research projects and going on field trips in order to meet the elders about the culture of the Okanagan Syilx people. Red Dress Day is a day that powerfully symbolizes the crisis faced by Indigenous women and girls with the red dress, a visual reminder of the many lives lost or missing. Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society is taking part in supporting the Indigenous community by organizing such events as ‘Sister in Spirit’ spreading awareness on the injustice they have received.
